Birds is a whimsical tribute to birds created by the couple Kevin Henkes and Laura Dronzek.
In simple prose and beautifully colored paintings, this book is a meditation on birds that is perfectly geared to the preschool child. Rather than convey facts, it conveys impressions and musings about birds, beginning with their colors and sizes and proceeding into metaphors about their movement. Moving quickly from one thought to another in an associative fashion, it almost seems to have been created by a child. In one double page spread the author and illustrator ask us to consider: “If birds made marks with their tail feathers when they flew, think what the sky would look like.” In another, they liken the exodus of a flock of birds to a tree’s shouting, “SURPRISE!” Birds is a book that reveals the everyday miracles in nature. It is a beautiful book to be enjoyed again and again!
